According to Collider.com, screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who previously collaborated on 2008’s blockbuster Iron Man, are currently developing a live action adaptation of Akira. The popular manga, created by Katsuhiro Otomo, was previously made into an anime film in 1988.
While the original storyline was set in Tokyo, Collider indicates that Warner Bros.’s new movie will be set in Manhattan, with American characters. Little else is known about how much it will change from the source material, but one thing is certain: Akira fans will see the iconic red motorcycle in live action.
If Fergus and Ostby’s screenplay is approved, the film may begin production as soon as next year and open in theaters in 2011.
